This program is designed for Spanish teachers for the purposes of professional development in Spanish language and Spanish history and art. Registrants in the Program may participate for a minimum of three weeks, or a maximum of four weeks. The program highlights language immersion, a truly intensive Spanish language experience, achieved in a variety of ways via a multifacted approach to language learning. Class size is set at a maximim of 4 students per class. The program also includes many out-of-class activities which reinforce the natural immersion experience.

What follows is an outline of the Professional Development Program’s principle components:

Classes (every morning for 3 hours, 30 minutes)

  • One Spanish Conversation class with a maximum of 4 students. Students are placed based on their level of proficiency. This class meets for two hours every day over the course of three weeks (M-F) or four weeks. Although this is a Spanish Conversation class, grammar and syntactical elements will be targeted in exercises and conversation. Class length: 2 hours
  • Spanish History and Art class. Class length: 90 minutes

One-On-One Language Sessions

  • Each program participant will also have two one-hour one-on-one sessions per week with a program instructor. Thus, in a three week program, each program participant will have 6 additional hours of individualized instruction. If they are here for four weeks, then they receive 8 additional hours of individualized instruction.

“Tapas” Tour

  • The group will meet two evenings per week with program faculty for a tapas tour. The idea is to socialize over “tapas,” and drinks, in Spanish naturally, as Spaniards do. So, in a three-week program, that means 6 group tapas tours. For 4 weeks, 8 tours.

Excursion Package (Part of Spanish History and Art class)

  • One night/Two days in Madrid (Walking tour of Old Madrid, Museo del Prado, Museo Reina Sofía, Group meal.)
  • Two one-day excursions (El Escorial/Valle de los Caídos; Palacio Real de la Granja de San Ildefonso/Real Fábrica de Cristales.)
  • One optional, albeit free, hike in the Guadarrama Mountain Range.

  • The group will have its farewell dinner at the famous Segovian restaurant, Cándido, with host señora and program faculty.
